The Rye Meeting House The Rye Meeting House was built prior to 1860, and has played a prominent role in the early history of the “Milltown” section of Rye. Its period of historical significance is the latter third of the 19th Century. Originally a discarded school house, it was purchased by Mr. Richard B. Chapman, a vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church of Rye, and donated to the church for use as a Sunday school. Ms. Easton led the formation of the Friends of the Rye Meeting House, a group whose effort is to raise community awareness and funds for a full restoration and site use proposal. She has also helped prepare the nomination for State and National Register listing, and has organized a team of professionals to complete an Existing Conditions Assessment of the property where all professional services were offered pro-bono to help get the project off the ground. The building is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. |
